A Radical Way To Organize the Computer Desktop

This desktop demo (called bumptop, hailing from the University of Toronto)  requires the use of a pen, doesn’t necessarily connect to any operating system and probably takes a substantial amount of computing. In fact, its probably nothing but vaporware as far as practicality is concerned for at least five years. On the other hand, this is a really cool demo, and its something that I’d like to try.

I look forward to trying this when it is available.

Andy Griffith Speaks Out on Extra-Judicial Wire Taps

Andy Griffith recorded a bit on the impropriety of surreptitiously recording  conversations  outside the due process of law.  He explains it to young Oppie in this clip below. He clearly feels strongly about it.

COMMENT:

a question from Fox News: Does Andy Griffith hate our troops or does he just want the terrorists to win?

Star Trek Analysis of Iraq on Comedy Central

This clip ties together the war in Iraq, Klingons and Vulcans (with an actual reference on the House floor - David Wu — D, OR), Comedy Central (how could it not be so with a Klingon reference on the House floor?), and commentary on Iraq, The House statement and who’s better Spock or Sulu?  “Lenny”  Nemoy and George Takei provide analysis.

iPhone Hype

There’s been a lot of iphone hype (especially for a device that won’t be out for six months, and whose specs we won’t really know until it shows). Conaon O’Brein has captured the hype well, here (and below).

An AWESOME Water toy

I ran across this boat in the UK’s Globe and Mail Today.  The article says it costs about $60k, but I’d love to try it.  If this thing works at all like the photo indicates, this thing will be a big hit.

Dolphin Water Craft

You might not quite appreciate the scale when looking at that photo. However, look carefully at the “nose” of the vehicle. That’s a guy in the front driving it. Its actually about 15 feet long.

Here’s a test of watercraft dolphin -- description.

Banana Eating Competition

here’s a link of two women each showing how much of a banana they can swallow.

I’m impressed by the second woman’s reluctance and capabilities, though men may be more likely to click through…

Cold War film with Matches as actors

This Google Video shows match sticks fighting a senseless war as a metaphor for the cold war.  I thought it was very clever, but found that my kids don’t yet have the background to have it explained.

Cell Phones Tapped — Even When Not On/In Use

CNet News (courtesy of \.) has an interesting article on the FBI’s exploitation of cell phones to monitor suspect’s activities — even when the phones are off.

Its not clear whether there was a physical device added to the cell phone or it was a software mod in this case, but it is clear that it is possible to activate the phone with the permission/support of the service provider, via software.

The article also references this BBC article that indicates intelligence agencies use a similar approach.
